It is not the 1911. That gun is big, bulky, moderately durable, and does not have high capacity mags. The handgun that has the most similar traits to an AK would have to be a glock. The polymer frame is much more durable and these guns can opperate under much harsher conditions, like the AK. The glocks are available in high capacity mags for those who prefer spray and pray tactics, like AK users and glocks have minimal safety features, just like the AK. Neither of the guns are precision firearms but will almost always function regardless of the scenario.

Most produced? Probably the M1911A1 or the M9 (I think that's the one based off of the Beretta 92). Reliability? Well, a AK is reliable in that it was originally more reliable than the M16A1 in dirty situations, but the current M16A2's don't suffer the same problem. The AK is also not as accurate.
The reason people use AK's is because they are easily acquired through black market dealers, both before and now even more so after the collapse of the Soviets. Cheap doesn't translate to best.
Personally, if I was going to make this call, I'd go with whatever Force Recon is using. I think they mainly use the M4A1 Close Quarters Battle Weapon and the MEU(SOC) Pistol.
Now, if you want to go a little more standard, the M16A2 is still a better firearm than any AK. The best combat handgun would still be the M1911A1 though, imo. The main reason for switching to the M9 was logistics (the rest of NATO was using the 9mm). The same thing happened when switching from the M14 to the M16A1 as the standard firearm, as NATO wanted to use the 5.56mm and the M14 was a .30 caliber (7.62mm).

I don't care if the commies made more AKs than we made M-4s and M-14s. I'll take one M-14 any day and you can keep your whole case of AKs, that is until I pop you with my M-14 and take your AKs and give them to kids to play with until they are ready to use a real rifle.
As for pistols, I'll take the Glock 10 in my pocket over any other pistol in the world. The 10mm round that the Glock 20 shoots may be the most under appreciated pistol round ever. My 190 grain reloads get about double the power of a .45 using 230 grain bullets, and the Glock 20 holds 15 in the magazine, more than any .45 with its standard magazine.
Glocks are the most reliable semiautomatic ever designed, and when your life is on the line you have to know that what you have will kill your enemy before he gets the chance to kill you, and you need 10mm power so he won't shoot back while he bleeds to death.

These are the only guns i trust in my family's lives..
1911 colt. Does not have a high cap mag but is fairly reliable gun is mass prouduced by a ton of gun makers, colt, springfield,S&W,papa, rockisland, wilsoncombat. and so on and so on. The guns almost has been around for darn near 60-80yrs... BUt these are other fine guns to.
Glock 19 9mm accurate reliable 9mm hi cap mags tactical drop mags(means they drop out for easy reloading) I think plastic is a plus plus there are a lot of configurations for your Glock sights adjustable and so on.
Beretta 92fs (m9) solid 9mm hi cap mags TAC DROP
Cz-75 in 9mm about the same as above
FN 5.7 the ultimate combat pistol in my estimation shoots the fast LOW RECOIL 5.7 HIGH PENETRATION rounds and long distance accuracy.. even the hollow points are very penetrable. With low recoil and high penetration (plus a 20 round mag) you put this gun in hands of a unskilled user they will have the ability for faster follow up shots and engage multiple targets easy. You will have a Problem! You put one of these in a skilled combatant. You will have a serious problem.... If you engage someone with this handgun in there hand you should treat them as they were armed with a rifle. And take cover.

Colt 1911A1 because like the AK it is reliable. But I am not particularly enamored with the AK. I prefer something a bit more accurate.

Kinda but very difficult. You need licenses but your state has a ban as well. I believe you need 3 different kinds of licenses and the AR needs to be a legal one. Heavily stripped down, neutered versions. Most semi-auto rifles just do to there design are flat illegal.

Gotta go with the Colt 1911 .45, there's a reason why it is still popular 90 years after it was invented.

The AK is a pile of junk for one thing. I dunno all I ever used is the m-4 and the m-14 i prefer m-14. and hangun well I never use em just for target shooting but if i had to pick one it would be the good old 1911 .45 its an oldie but a goodie, cause when your using pistols your so close that all that fancy b-s about shooting a long way goes out the window, cause if you got a pistol at 100 yards Ill blow your head apart with my m14
