I would like to know if anyone knows how to find a good Psychiatrist. I would like to know what the costs are and if it is covered by insurance? If anyone could tell me how to find a good Psychiatrist and give me details about seeing one it would really really help me out.

Thanks

Psychiatrists are medical doctors and are usually covered by insurance. Your insurance company should have a list of psychiatrists they refer to - call and ask for referrals for psychiatrists in your area. Then call those psychiatrists and ask about how they work with people. Most psychiatrists prescribe medications and rarely delve into personal issues. If you want psychotherapy, ask your insurance company for a psychologist, MFT (marriage and family therapist), or LCSW (licensed clinical social worker). Those are the clinicians who will talk with you to help you work out your problems.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who went on for further education in the field of mental health, psychotropic medication, counseling, etc.

Most insurance will cover the cost of a psychiatrist if there is a valid reason. Check your PPO list and find one they recommend because they would not pay for someone who was not licensed.

It may take one or two different psychiatrists until you find the one suitable for your needs. You have to trust the person and be able to openly and honestly talk about your problems and other issues.

The cost varies by each insurance. Your policy book should spell out what your deductible is, if any, and how many visits per calendar year they will pay for. The doctor will evaluate you and send a letter to your insurance, stating how they will help, not specifics (privacy issue), but justification.

If you don't think your insurance covers psychiatrists, then contact your local mental health center (either county or State) which is based on a sliding fee scale.

You dont say where you live, but I would imagine most states handle this the way California does. First you are referred to a psychiatrist who is usually associated with a psychologist. If it is determined that you may need medication, the psychiatrist will order them. The office will make an appointment for you to see the psychologist. Both work with you to help with whatever problem there is. It can be a very worthwhile experience. Good luck.

Hi,
A psychiatrist prescribes drugs, just to let you know. If you are after that, go onto the Internet and google your state's medical board. There is a long list of psychiatrists there.
However, if you want somebody to talk to, to work out any issues you might be facing, a psychologist or counsellor is the way to go.

Good luck!

Finding a psychiatrist is easy. You can look in the phone book. But finding a GOOD one is harder. If you get the wrong doctor, you can end up feeling worse. You need to be able to discuss things with this person and feel that he/she truly cares. If this does not happen with the first doc, seek out another.
If you have any friends who can recommend someone, you might have better results.

It depends on what insurance you have and what kind of problem you are having. Usually if you have an insurance card there is a mental health number on the back of the card that you can call to get in to see a psychologist.

Go to this link, it's part of the APA (American Psyciatric Association)

http://www.healthyminds.org/

can also go to American Medical Association, as psychiatrists are doctors too. If they are a member it tells where they went to school, insurance they take, etc.

Good luck!

go to your county's social work community center, or goto your county hospital. they usually have lists of psychiatrists for a smaller fee. there are alot of places where you can get help, if you goto church in your city, then ask someone from church to help.

if you are a parent, and it's about your kid, go to your child's school, talk to the school psychologist, and they usually have the information you need. if it's for you, then you can goto your nearby community college, and ask the health center at that college. they usually have lists of hospitals there.

try also googling it.

there aren't any all they do is push drugs at you to cover up symptoms and not bother to look for the cause of the issue.
