I'm not sure where you are. However, in the States, if any religious organization turns a promised, voluntary, gift, tithe or offering into a debt can end up both in civil court and tax court if they harass the person they believe "owes" them the money. Mostly they duck quick when you bring up the law because the media just love to get a hold of those kind of scenarios. However, if you signed a contract for services rendered or in the future you had better have a good lawyer.

Tithing was a requirement of the Mosaic Law , The Mosaic Law fulfilled its purpose and was taken out of the way. Tithing was not included among those "NECESSARY" things made binding on christians ..see Acts 15:28,29 Abraham Voluntary gave a tenth, or tithe to Melchizedek on just one occasion -Gen. 14: 18-20 and Jacob vowed to give a tenth to God; not required by Law. Gen. 2820-22...christian giving should be voluntary, No amount specified 2 cor. 9:7 "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."Acts 11:29,30
