Variations in a creatinine level can be cause by many things such as dehydration, medications, renal failure.
High levels can mean the kidneys are not functioning well.
It really depends on what else is going on.
If the high creatinine is drug related, the medication is stopped or adjusted for the renal clearance. If it is related to renal failure, many times dialysis is started. Some people have chronic renal failure where the creatinine rises and stays there. They are monitored to determine if they will be needing dialysis and sometimes a dialysis fistula is put in for preperation for the day the kidneys are not functioning well enough to clear the waste from the blood and dialysis has to be started.
Physicians start adjusting medications to help the kidneys function better. They stop the Metformin, start the pts on blood pressure meds (usually lisinopril). They sometimes give doses of Lasix to try to make the pt urinate.
RN in a hospital and work a lot with renal patients.
