The word you need is "Roman", but from your hint, you're probably looking for the derisive "Byzantine."

The empire at Constantinople was the Roman Empire of Constantine, Caesar, and Cicero. It was a Frankish claim to the title "Holy Roman Empire" that caused us to start calling it Byzantine, and it's designed as an insult (e.g. "Byzantine politics"). Perhaps we should call it by what they called themselves and what people in the West called it up until the time of Charlemagne: the Roman Empire. Heck, afterwards, they *still* called it Romania (read Urban VI's call for the Crusades as an example).
