Engagement rings are traditionally diamond, and wedding bands are usually gold (white or yellow). But there aren't really any definate rules. You can have whatever kind of rings you like.

You MUST have a ring at the proposal. Take her shopping and ask her to show you what she does and doesn't like. She has to wear it forever. DO NOT buy a ring without finding out what she likes. Do not buy the ring together - that's your job. Make the proposal a suprise - the when and the where (My husband is telling what he thinks over my shoulder). I knew my hubby was going to propose, and I had some say in the ring. All in all, I have to admit, that I thought the ring and proposal were important, but what's more important is that he's an excellent husband. That said, I LOVE my ring. And I had a lot of say in it. I look at it all the time. Also, buy what you can afford. Do not buy it on credit. Pay cash. If you don't have cash, save until you do. How weird to have a engagement ring that isn't paid for. Its just not right! Good luck, and congratulations in advance.

2 karat solitare set in a platinum or white gold band....can't go wrong with that for an engagement and for the wedding a plain platinum band to match......she will love u .......atleast for a lil while if u do that....good luck .........hope u have some dough saved up buddy.

Ok, my boyfriend wrote that. HAhaahah. Yeah this is what I want, but u don't have to go that big. It's about the proposal and spending your life together...not the ring. The ring is a symbolism of your love and committment to one another. But basically the diamond is for the engagement and the band is for the marriage.

Diamonds are the traditional engagement ring. Make sure you know what type of gold the woman prefers (gold, white gold, tri-color) and choose a nice setting/shape (Princess cut, square, round, solitare) ask the jeweler about the clarity and color of the diamond. A lot of the jewelers sell ring sets so you have the matching band for the ceremony. Good luck!

I prefer the older tradition of a colored stone such as a ruby or emerald, or perhaps her birthstone. You can also get a much larger stone for your money that way, and perhaps accent it with diamonds. But some women are going to insist on a diamond solitaire. It really depends on her style.

I like wedding bands that match or coordinate personally. But maybe you should find out from your girlfriend what kind of stuff she likes. Lots of women choose the coordinating engagement rings and wedding bands that nestle together later.

Well I got engaged and he gave me a Pearl with two little diamonds next to it and i love it. usually a diamond is what is traditional but get a ring with her favorite stone it always means more because you took into concideration her favorite stone and put some thought into it. And make sure you can afford it don't go into debt for it that just makes it hard for you. Usually the wedding bands are just a plain gold bands but you can be creative and spice it up a bit.

Just choose an engagement ring you think she might like, and which fits your budget. Sometimes there is a matching wedding band, or you can just get a plain gold band.

Buy a nice diamond in a plain setting, that way she can re set the diamond in a different setting if she wants to. You usually buy wedding bands together, they dont have to match but they usually do.

You should buy what you can afford. The rule of thumb is two months' salary. Do a little window shopping at well-known jewelers to get an idea of what you like. If she knows the question is coming, or if you've talked about it, you might ask her what she likes. Otherwise, make sure you can exchange it for something if she doesn't like what you've bought. Anyway, find a style you like, do a little comparison shopping, then buy at Sam's. I know, I know, but they're cheaper, and they have really nice stuff.

It all depend on what type of person she is. If she is a traditional person then a past, present, future ring is good. If she more modern then you can do a simple center stone with side stone with color or a different shape
