Can someone explain to me what it means if a mental health professional is listed as a Masters Level Clinician? Does this mean psychiatrist, psychologist, etc?

Thanks in advance.

A Master's Level Clinician is a mental health professional with a masters degree, but not a doctorate degree. Examples would be people with degrees in social work and additional clinical training, counseling psychology, and master's level clinical psychology. These people are competent, licensed clinicians.

The American Psychological Association has defined a Psychologist as someone with a doctorate degree in psychology, a PhD., PsyD. or EdD. Not all psychologists are clinicians, mostly only those trained in clinical or counseling psychology. Some who are trained in educational psychology take additional training in psychotherapy to become clinicians.

Master's level clinicians who previously called themselves psychologists could keep doing so after the APA changed their rules, but for people graduating later, they may not call themselves psychologists.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors and have an M.D. or D.O. degree. There are also Master's level Clinical Nurse Specialists who can practice psychiatry like a psychiatrist, under a psychiatrist's supervision. Although they are Master's level, the are not usually referred to as Master's level Clinicians. Nurses with a BSN and additional training in psychiatry and psychotherapy can do many of the things Master's level clinicians do even though they do not have a Master's degree. Does this shed any light?

Master level MH professional can be either a social worker or more general "psychologist."

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (4 years med school) plus 1 year internship and at least 3 years residency.

the lady below could very well be right about all that but I had a clinician who had a ph.d and was not a pychologist at all. now perhaps she was over trained for her job, a clinician can have an msw, and that is just a social worker. give me all the thumbs down you want, but I've been under these folks care and was well aware of their credentials, as they wore them like a badge of pride. so, whatever you all say...now can someone take me out for a walk, or let me go out and smoke? I like all the insane pretty nurses best anyway, they are lots of fun. yeehaw, and you nurses know what I'm talkin' about, ain't that so? hahahahaha.... By the way the type of nurse this lady is talkin about who can practice psychiatry under a psychiatrists supervision is called an FNP, at least in the state of Idaho, and don't even try to call B.S on someone who was locked up in a state mental hospital, with an FNP doing my psychiatric care, prescribing meds and the whole hill of beans.
