Sounds goofy but it works! If she wears a ring on that finger, take it and press it into some bread while she is in the shower or sleeping...then take the bread to the jeweler...they actually see this a lot more than you'd think. That way she isn't missing it and you don't appear suspicious.

That is so sweet. Does she have other rings that she doesn't wear all the time on that finger? Maybe you could borrow one of those and take it to the jeweler.
Or if she takes her rings off while she is in the shower you could trace around the center on a piece of paper and take that to the jeweler, then they can lay their ring sizer thing on it and tell you. But even if you get the wrong size you can always resize it later.

It still is customary (or a nice gesture) to express to the parents your intentions and ask their approval. After doing this, ask her mom if she knows her size. If not, maybe they can do a mother daughter day and happen to walk into a cheesy ring shop and try rings on (thereby finding the size). A close friend could do this as well with her. Best of luck. That is sweet to want it to be a surprise!

Ask a friend of hers who you've sworn to secrecy. Also, many times when you're shopping for a ring, you can just pick out the diamond and the jeweler will give it to you in a sort of loaner setting. You take it back later to choose the setting and the size.

If she has othe rings she wears, you can "borrow" one and have the jewler tell you what size it is (they have these little measuring rings) so you can get the engagement ring sized correctly. They can even do it if you trace the inside of one her current rings on a piece of paper and have them size against that. (just make sure you use a ring that fits on her ring finger!)
Congrats!

You don't neccessarily have to find out her ring size. My fiance just bought a ring he liked, which happened to be too big, and then we got it sized later. I didn't mind.
Unless you can find a ring of hers and borrow it without her noticing, or get one of her friends or relatives to find out somehow, i don't think there is a way to find out her ring size without her figuring out what you're doing.

I agree with everyone. Don't sweat it. Either get an idea by looking at a ring she already wears, or buy the ring and have it re-sized.

Does she have any rings currently? Look for rings she has and take one to a jeweler. If not, ask her, and say you're thinking of a "future" gift.

You really don't need to. Choose the ring you think she might like, and if it doesn't fit, the jeweller where you got it will usually resize it free. She wouldn't have to be without it long!

If she wears other rings, maybe you can "borrow" one that she isn't wearing, go to a jeweler to see what size it is. And then return it before she notices.
