The fastest way to catch crabs is to go out at night in about 12-18 inches of water with a good flashlight and wade around where they should be. Take a crab net or landing net and quickly scoop them up. At night the crabs do not spook easily and if you're fast, never know what hit them. I quickly went away from the bait method because it took so long. I can catch a dozen large crabs in 30 minutes or less. I don't know about your area, but here there are a lot of good places to wade around looking for them. They seem to prefer a short seagrass bottom.

The simple way to catch them is to get a dead fish or a piece of raw chicken.Tie it to a string with about 3 ounces of sinkers on it.Drop it off the side of a boat or dock and let it sit on the bottom for about 20 minutes.Very gently bring it up to the surface and have a dip net ready.Usually there will be a crab holding onto the meat. You have to be fast to net them.A better way to catch them is to buy a hoop net or basket. This looks like a net with a couple rings of wire tied in them.Bait it and put the weights in it just like the string. This way you will have the crab in the net already. If you use a basket pull the net up fast this way he can't climb over the side when you bring it up.
Don't know where you live but if you live close to the beach you can catch them at night.Take a flash light , dip net and a cooler.Walk in the edge of the incoming surf and shine the light down in front of you and just walk slowly. You will see crabs feeding on things in the water.Use the net to scoop them up as you walk along.
These are all a poor mans ways of catching crabs but it works.I have caught alot of them this way.

Blue Claw Crabs love chicken. Don't know why, my guess it is the fatty skin, but all you need is to buy a crab trap and tie a piece of chicken to the bottom. Also if you have a scoop net, you could tie a chicken leg to a piece of string, and toss the string out into slow moving water, canal or back bays. And once you see the string tighten you slowly bring the string in. Once the chicken and crab is close to the surface. Don't lift. Instead use the scoop net to scoop the blue claw crab dangling on the chicken.

They have actual crab traps you can buy. They range from $25-$200. Its is much easier than using a dip net if your not looking to chase them around. Once you have the trap there is a place to put chicken or fish or whatever bait you want in the center. I prefer a fish carcass after filleting it. You can either attach the end of the rope running from the trap to a bouy or a pier or dock. Let it sit at least overnight even longer if you want better luck. this link has anything for crab fishing.

If straight down, like from a dock or bridge use a net basket type of trap only like $3.00 at wal - mart. If you want to throw your trap from the bank get some metal box cage types that the sides open & close when you pull the string, $7.00 at Wal-Mart.
As for bait the cheapest, eaiset & best thing is Chicken legs. You can tie them to the bottom of the trap by wrapping fishing line around the small end, it can't slip off because of the joint. You can use them several days, in fact on the 2nd & 3rd day after being in the sun awhile they will stink & better attract the crabs.
PS I don't like the cheap string that come w/ the traps. I trade it out for military Parchute cord.............
