Bloody bowel movements may be cause by a anal fistula. It starts as a tear in the anal sphincter due to holding back the bowel movement. Over a period of time the tear becomes an infectious tract, that's basically like a little tunnel that gets further into the body over time. My fistula took about 30 years to surface as a boil (large pimple), the tract was about 4" long and took three operations from a proctologist to remove, very nasty. I had no idea such a thing could happen. The fistula started out when I was a child, my dad who's a doctor tried to repair the torn sphincter at age 6 with silver nitrate, obviously the repair was unsuccessful. I had bloody bowel movements infrequently over the 30 year period, believing it was the unsuccessful repair of the torn sphincter, when in fact it was a fistula. I suggest you search Google for more info on anal fistula and see a proctologist. Learning from the proctologist and close friends, fistulas are common, but are rarely talked about due to the embarrassment.

Dark colored blood or tarry stool is not a good sign. See your doctor. Bright red blood is probably internal hemorrids. Place a generous amount of vaseline up the old poop-shoot a few days in a row and if that doesn't help see your doctor. This advice is just a small portion of my dad's "Home remedies or sure fired ways to get yourself killed" handbook.
Acording to him the only things that should be in the medicine cabinet are : Alcohol, Camphophenique, Vaseline, Asprin, 1 small needle, tweesers, tooth brush, tooth paste and something to read.

Absolutely see a doctor or go to the ER. Bright red blood usually means fissures (skin cracks) or hemorrhoids. Dark red blood comes from further up in your digestive tract and often indicates serious problems, including cancer. Either way, you could become anemic from the bleeding, and your life could be in danger without a transfusion. This is not stuff to play with.

You do need to see a doctor but dont get too worried just yet. You may need to make some adjustments in your diet or something else simple. But definitely see a doctor.

Call your doctor. My grandmother and a close friend had the same problem. For my grandmother it is just hemorroids, but for my friend he is having liver problems. But of course these arent the only things it could be so the best answer is to call ur doctor right away.
Good luck!
