just wondering...are they even related?

YES They are related. A plantain is the starchier, less sugary, equivalent of a banana. Both are MUSA

Whether you will be allergic to something is difficult to predict. If you are allergic to one thing then possibly as you correctly asked you may be allergic to another substance that is related. Plantains ARE related to bananas. My guess is that you probably would react to plantains. It is possible you might not but don't take the chance. Sometimes things that are related you wouldn't think of.....Just for future reference many people that are allergic to tropical fruits like mangos or bananas may also be allergic to latex products (this is important medically).......since the rubber tree (where they get the natural latex from) is related to these other tropical plants plants

They are very, very similar. I wouldn't risk eating a plantain if I were you. I'd also avoid Caribbean foods unless you know exactly what is in them.

They are related, so it's best not to eat them either.
