Our department (in California)...

After the academy (26 weeks), you work in the jail for 2-3 years. After that, you've got an option to go into patrol or the courts. In going into patrol, you're paired up w/ a field-traininig officer, who makes sure the book-learning in the academy can be applied to the street. Once you're patrol-qualified, the doors start opening up - investigations, coroner's office, SWAT, etc... and promotions. They want to make sure you can handle yourself appropriately on your own.

I'm not a sheriff, but I hang out with a lot of them!

You can go into Highway Patrol, deputy, or city police and get a gun and a car in most states. You can also be a guard or a night watchman in some areas with the same perks.

Hope this helps! Nana

I'm a jailer. I've had a few employees use this job as a springboard to become a Deputy Sheriff with our department. Hasn't worked yet for me.

you first go through the law enforcement academy - 16 weeks
then you have field training - 16 weeks

then you get sworn in - and get your own car

in our county - you may also spend 2 years as a detention
deputy before going to the road ( and work the jail)
