I'm a new Christian. I have read the New Testament several times and several books written by some well known pastors, but whenever I tried to read the OT, I fell into sleep. Yesterday I downloaded an audio Bible from the internet and listened to it after dinner. This time, I didn't feel sleepy. I listened to Genesis and were touched by the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. All of a sudden, the OT became an interesting book.You can download it here: http://www.audiotreasure.com/
If you have a MP3 player, you can listen to it anywhere, anytime. You need a "download manager" to download a huge audio file like that. Many "download manager" softwares are free to download on the internet. Download one from a reliable website (watch out the viruses) and install it on your computer before downloading the Bible.

Adelaide: I've never heard of Watchman Nee, probably b/c I'm a new Christian, or probably he was arrested by the secret police and his case was not released to the media. You are right. In China, if a Christian openly disagrees with the government on religious issues, he/she will be arrested.

try reading a conservative translation of a summary of each book. That will give you an overview. Then as needed you can develope more information and have a basic knowledge of each book. Zondervan press (N I V) study bible may help. Some of that information is difficult to maintain a high interest. Did you ever find the Bible that was lost?

No, but I grew up in a home where heard all the time about the Father and His son. I grew up with stories from the Old Testament, so once I learned to read, they became familiar friends....there are parts of the OT I find difficult but most of that is the Law. I'm reading Hosea right now....an awesome love story....to show His love for Israel, the Father has His prophet Hosea marry a prostitute..and then she leaves him and has 3 children with other men and the Father tells him to go get her and bring her home as His wife.

Have you ever heard of Watchman Nee?
He was a very devoted man of God who saved many many people in China and elsewhere around the world.
He was inprisoned for his faith and lived the last 20 years of his life in a Chinese Prison.
All he had to do to be set free was denounce Jesus.
But he never did.
He has many books of which I own most of and I highly recommend them to someone who is new to the faith.
"The normal Christian Life" by Watchman Nee is an excellent book.Also "The spiritual man" is another good book and "Finest of the Wheat".
He is responsible for many books that were written and all of them are excellent.
But to answer your question I don't really get sleepy reading the old testament.I love reading the bible especially Proverbs because it teaches wisdom and understanding.

I never read in the Bible that God "needs" animal sacrifices so I don't have any feelings about something that isn't there. The animal sacrifices were symbolic representations of the ultimate sacrifice that would be "required" of God and His son Jesus Christ to atone for the sins of human beings. They were a means by which human beings could express faith in this ultimate sacrifice that was still in the future. Blood and killing was a part of the religious practices of heathen nations at that time but their sacrifices were primarily HUMAN. Most all their sacrifices were of other HUMAN BEINGS and especially children. This is why God often abbreviated their lives as a way of limiting the length and strength of their misery. Show N Tell

I have never made it through reading the entire Bible, however many times I tried when I was young. Now I have long since stopped trying, and just look up passages when I want to discuss something. But then, I am not a Christian.

No. How could you feel sleepy getting through that awful faerie tale. God kills over 2 million people in it. That would be like sleeping through the Holocaust.
