The Unitarian Church is currently the primary organ of support for gay marriage. The Episcopalian,Presbyterian, and Lutheran Churches have always been strong supporters of gay rights. Where did this idea get started that Christians are "against" gay rights when we've consistently been it's strongest supporters? When did tv evangelists supposedly acquire authority over the majority denominations? News to me. Do you think there might be better sources of gays & Christianity than tv? You know - like a library, maybe? Not to make an atheist throw up by suggesting he/she actually read a book...

i don't think it's 'christians' tha are anti-gay. it's mostly the small, but extremely loud and politically powerful evangelical chirstians that are anti-gay. you are correct in saying that many protestant christian faiths strongly support gays. i think those christians need to step up and have their voice heard because it's the small evangelical minority that is speaking for all christians.

As a number of other respondents have pointed out, the Bible (God) does condemn homo-sexuality as a sin, a sin just like all the others.

Therefore we as Christians must love the sinner, but hate the sin.

One of the other respondents stated that the Lutheran Church supports gay rights. The non confessional (liberal) Synods do, confessional Lutheran synods do not. However we also understand from the Bible that if someone confesses there sins and sincerely repents of them, their sins are forgiven. Generally within the Confessional Synods of the Lutheran Church homo-sexual males CAN attend Seminary, and be ordained, providing they make a vow of celibacy. This is no different than expecting a hetero-sexual to lead a chaste and decent life.

I'm not taking sides here, but not everyone supports the leaders of any organisation, whether it be church, government, sporting or any type of group. We are all individuals, and we all have the right to disagree with those in 'authority'.
I see a failure to separate Christians from the Church, they are not necessarily synonymous.

Perhaps the idea started with the God's Word, that gays will not make it to heaven because He hates sin.
A few renegade Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches do not speak for all of Christianity.

What you need to remember is that churches are run by men/women who can often be politically motivated. Another factor to consider is that people often bend the rules a little to try and make things easier, "go with the flow". If all churches went by the Bible then not one single church would support same sex marriage but all would support the basic human rights.

there are more homophobic christians than gay-friendly ones.

there is no denomination that is gay-friendly. but some denominatinos have churchs which aren't supported by all of the other churches

but its good to point this out. I know gay churchs (one in my city), I know a group online for gay jewish men, and I know a group for gay people who are muslim.
groups and organizations like this need to become popular with people and show that not all religions (or sects) are homophobic

The usual barrage of rhetoric is appearing, displaying intolerance and bigotry against gays. Instead of referring to selective passages in Leviticus or Romans, maybe believers would do better to focus on the hundreds of biblical passages about heterosexual fornication, adultery and divorce. Particularly so, when the divorce rate amongst born-again evangelical believers is much higher than normal. Baptist article follows:

Um, let's see... I've had Christians BOTH in real life and online here on Yahoo tell me I was an abomination to their god and deserved to burn for all eternity in hell because I'm not straight. No, it wasn't based on TV programs, it's based on real life experiences. I've had Christians throw sh!t at me (literally) and vandalize my property because of it.

So yeah, while there may be some Christians who do support LGBT rights, most of the ones I have encountered do not.

Christianity has a poor track record of keeping it all together.

Look at 1 Corinthians 11 - second half of chapter

Your inncorrect most of the real denominations do not support gay marriage because being gay is a sin against God and the idea of marriage is between a man and woman. the 3 denominations u mentioned u must have talked to a gay person who came outta the closet that told you that. i by denomination am lutheran n can say without a doubt that lutherans are anti gay and anti gay marriage.

First, let me ask you if the following are sins...
Fornication? idolatry? adultery? theft? coveting? drunkeness? reviling? extortion?

Would you say "yes"? Then you would be right. Do these compromising churches accept these sins as OK? So now you have to deal with 1 Corinthians 6:8-10

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God."

So, yes, the Bible makes it plain that it is indeed sin, and in the company of some pretty hefty ones at that. But just make sure you understand that God loves the individual, however, their behavior and life choice will lead them into bondage that will harden their hearts to God's eternal salvation. Because homosexuality involves so much emotional investment, it is almost impossible to tell the them the truth without being labeled with very harsh epithets.

Remember, the sin of homosexuality is no blacker than my sin. And if the Christian truly hated homosexuals, they would keep the message of salvation to themselves, not try to change them, and let them go on their merry way to destruction. But because we care, we take the slings and arrows of 90% of the media and public to speak the truth.

The Bible states that homosexuality is behavioral, for Paul states that many of the new believers had been delivered from homosexuality in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11,

"Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites... will inherit the kingdom of God. And SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God."
