I recently went out with a man that didn't have much to say he would occasionally contribute to the conversation but most of the time he was in deep thought. I almost became supicious as if he where over analysing and kept his thoughts to himself. Most of the time he kept me in the dark or grey with decision making. What was he really thinking and why wouldn't he share it with me. I finally ended it because the lack of communication was unbearable and I wanted something deeper then just intense stares.

Being a silent type myself he is probally just bored of your conversation or he is genuinly shy. Perhaps you was using the whole "so hows that weather he he he". Besides from being boring it doesnt give much oppitunity to express yourself.

Try asking other questions, some that may spark some interest, if he sees your trying to make an effort to understand him he might bite at one of the questions and go into more detail. For example if he likes video games and you say something about him he might start up that way. Perhaps just try something deep and see if he can relate.

Dont take offence at the fact that he doesnt talk to you as much, its just that not all guys are intreuged with the boring conversations.

You two probably didn't have anything in common, and the whole time in his head he was trying to come with things to say, but nothing would pop up. It's has happened to me before. Can I have ten points please?

He may have been just shy and nervous. Or mentally ill. Or mute.
