Considering the level of talent that each driver mentioned had to compete against i would have to agree with Dave Dispain. You can't pick the greatest. With all do respect to the king he raced in an era were there wasn't the level of talent that Dale and Jeff had to race against. Know i am not taking anything away from him but he won 200 races and 7 championships and that is well you can't really put that into words its just awesome but towards the later part of his career he raced against Waltrip and Earnhardt and he wasn't as successful as they were and you can blame old age but i see Richard at the races every week and he looks good enough to climb into a race car today. He raced for 32 years Waltrip didn't race that long in Nascar and neither did Dale. So you have to take into account the people they raced against Petty had Pearson,Allison And Yarbarough.Dale had Waltrip,Wallace,Elliott,Martin,Jarrett,Labonte,And Gordon. Now Jeff had Earnhardt and his son,Wallace Stewart,Martin.Elliott,Johnson,Kenseth, both Labonte's,Jarrett and the list goes on. So you can't pick the greatest Dale could do with a car what nobody else could do.Petty would just dominate if he had a good car. Jeff could out think you on the track. So i will just say that each driver was the best in his prime

I am huge Gordon Fan and always will be; and yes I would say he is better then Dale Sr.. He is racing against the most talented pack of Drivers any racing series has ever seen.
Dale Sr. was blessed with coming into NASCAR at a time when there weren't that many great Drivers and what great ones there where were well past their prime.
Petty has to contend with Pearson, A J Foyt, and the Alabama Gang. Dale Sr. had DW to contend with. Gordon has Kennseth, Johnson, Stewart, and a host of up and coming young Drivers to contend with.

its a toss up between Pearson and Gordon
Petty, Pearson and to a extent Earnhardt has much much less competition. Now they race and the majority of the teams have a chance to win
Petty raced in a era where they would race some 50 times a season or more. Consider this Petty has raced in 1184 races and had 200 wins, Gordon has won 78 times in 484 races. Pearson raced in 574 races adn won 105. In my opinon the Petty 200 wins is like Cy young win stat, will most likely never be broken but in no way does it mean they were teh best ever
Dale earnhardt raced in more races than both Pearson and Gordon and has fewer wins than both

Dale Earnhardt was great for Nascar. Id put him in the top 5. David Pearson, "The Silver Fox," I think was the best. Dale was great because he brought excitment to the track. When he died, we started losing it. How long until the cars have blinkers? There wouldnt be nearly as many penalties for aggressibe driving. He seemed to keep the sport's integrity.

there really is no "BEST EVER" in my opinion. I don't think its fair to compare drivers of today to those 30 years ago. The cars were different, the rules were different, and the drivers were different. No doubt that Dale Sr. made nascar what it is today, you either loved him or hated him. I think Dale Sr., Pearson, Petty, and Gordon are prolly the top drivers.........as for the best, there never will be a best in my opinion.

Pearson, Petty, Earndhardt, Gordon..... All great drivers, but it's too hard to pick an order. I'd love to see them all in their prime, and in the same equipment. I'm betting that if the four of them were all together, the rest of the field would be crying because only four people would be winning races.

Jeff Gordon is the best. But I'm sure in several years someone else will come along that will give him some competition.

one of the best but petty makes a strong arguement on that ,also dave pearson with 105 wins second all time in wins makes a strong case because he only ran a full schedule to contend for a championship 4 times and in those 4 seasons he won 3 championships ,he by far has the better numbers if you look at number of seasons and wins

Dale Sr. was my guy. But... with 200 wins, I'd have to say Richard Petty was. Followed closely by David Pearson, then Dale Sr.
