..sent a letter to my old landlord who stole my money that said something like, "YOU ARE THE BIGGEST A**HOLE EVER" with no mention of physical harm? Would it be ok to express that opinion?
Could I go to jail for that?

I've been to court before and it's a lot of stress, so I want to avoid it. I know it sounds petty, but this woman is a deceitful person who always talks about how giving she is. I know saying something like that will hurt her, and I think it would be worth my $700!
If she gets upset enough or remembers this incident, maybe she'll understand or change.

Sounds lawful. This doesn't fit the elements of a crime for terrorist/criminal threats (in California)

No, actually. As long as you do not mention any potential of harming the person for being what you describe, you are merely expressing an opinion.
However, I question what you intend to gain from sending such a missive, other than venting at the person. I can see no actual benefit from doing so. I would recommend going to a park and venting your frustrations, and then putting all of this anger behind yourself and moving on with life.

Do you have a receipt for the $700? I bet I could look up some civil laws to get your money refunded. I even found a las in Arizona that got one person here her deposit amount times two when her landlord held on to it without an itemized receipt past 14 business days.
Don't get mad, get your money back.

NO, you would not go to jail for writing something to that effect. But why would you want to put it on paper and give them evidence that it even happened??? Call them up and tell them what you think, no violence or destruction mentioned though.
I say when you stoop to their level then you are no better than they are! Be the bigger person and let it go. If you really thought they stole your money you could take them to court. You have to be able to prove what you say though.
Good Luck!

As long as you make no threats of physical violence, then you should be OK. What you stated is merely an opinion, not a threat; I see no harm in that as long as you only do it once. Repeated letters like this could possibly constitute harassment in some areas.

As long as it isn't something public where it could be considered slander or libel, and no mention is made of unlawful activities such as violence or destruction of property you should be fine. Strongly worded letters are, as far as I know, legal. Oh, and don't call him something derogatory ethnically so he can't call it racially motivated or whatever. As far as I know, a$$holes are not a legally protected minority yet.

No - as long as you do not threaten her or anyone else, you are entitled to say whatever you want.
If you think she is going to change your words, you could write the letter and then laminate it or something.

The biggest?.
That's a scary visual.
Don't worry about getting in trouble. He would have to prove that he wasn't.
I'm giving you 10 points.
