Generic guards ar enot the way to go. Most of them are sports guards and are completely different than a night guard, and won't fit your mouth if you have less than immaculate teeth.

Going to the dentist will give you a custom fit that is right for you. If you don't want to spend the $400+ on a night guard, have them construct a sports guard for you and tell them you plan to use it as a night guard, so they know where and how to trim it for you. A custom sports guard runs for about $25-30. PLus, you can get just about any colour you want!

I think they're okay. I asked my dentist about them and she said it's fine as long as it fits properly and doesn't fall out. The ones they offer at the dentist is specially molded to your teeth but I didn't want to spend $500. I got the one where you boil them and mold them to your mouth. I think the brand is Doctor's. It's bulkier but fits really well. I lose mines or wear them out fast so buying a couple of these is really cost effective. Don't buy the sports kinds, she said it's not effective. Also make sure they are sturdy, not the flimsy plastic. That way you don't want to bite at night. Used them for several years, stopped me from chipping, moving, and wearing down my teeth. My dentist said I'm doing great, just keep it up. Good luck!

HELLO TURTLE,

A NIGHT GUARD WILL NOT ACT ON THE MUSCLES WHICH CAUSES NIGHT-TIME GRINDING. TO STOP BRUXISM FOR SURE YOU NEED TO HAVE A DENTIST MAKE YOU AN N.T.I.-tss APPLIANCE. THE LINK BELOW TELL MORE ABOUT IT:
A STORE BOUGHT NIGHT GUARD, AND MOST OF THE ONES THE DENTIST MAKES DO NOT ACTUALLY STOP YOU FROM GRINDING.
I'VE MADE MANY OF THESE FOR MY PATIENTS AND THEY TELL ME ALL THE TIME THAT AFTER SEVERAL GUARDS MADE BY OTHERS THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WHICH STOPS THEM FROM GRINDING
