State policy for many countries is against constructing any new nuclear reactors.

Nuclear power plants took a credibility dive in the 70's and 80's with the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl nuclear disasters. See the movie The China Syndrome with Jack Lemmon (it had the misfortune of releasing 2 weeks before the three mile island accident) to see what could go wrong.

The only country i'm aware of that's developing nuclear energy is Iran (allegedly) and Russia. Russia is actually making floating nuclear plants they could sell to other countries. France I think is powered 60% by nuclear plants, but most countries do not create new ones. The U.S. in particular.

People are scared of nuclear energy.

Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine all use nuclear energy for over 30% of their energy use.

It does have it's problems though. Nuclear waste is the big problem. Uranium, the main material, takes billions of years to decompose.

Also, it requires Uranium. When you mine Uranium, you end up using fuel, which is sort of counter-productive, if you ask me.

Nuclear power plants are expensive to build and complex to operate. The radiation they generate is fatal to humans in sufficient doses, and accidents, such as the one at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, can kill many people suddenly and without warning. The nuclear waste material from the plants is dangerous to humans for thousands of years, until the radiation dies down, and presents a very difficult storage problem. Still, France has managed to make it work. I think about 70% of their electricity comes from nuclear power.

If you get the date for Three Mile Island problem and the release date for the movie, China Syndrome and look before and after those dates things will clear up for you.

People are basically ignorant and listen to their favorite Hollywood stars in order to form an opinion. You would be amazed how many people thing a reactor can blow up like a nuclear weapon.
