The 1st church was the gathering together at Mount Sinai when Moses came down from the mount on his 1st trip to the mount. Church means "congregation" or "assembly". Since the resurrection of the Messiah the "church" now are the believers in Christ. The physical building is just tradition but is not the true church.

Alright. You asked.
"How did the church get started?"
If you are referring to THE church, founded by Jesus Christ, you can read all about it in the Bible. Look in the book "Acts" and turn to chapter 2. Read that chapter and you will know the answer to your question. Although there is only ONE church, I hope it is the one you inquiry about. This may be your LAST CHANCE! Make sure you get it right and do not be conformed by doctrines of men. Search out the word of God and study it.

The book of Acts has a total of twenty-eight chapters and it’s primary purpose was to give the history of the Christian church and thereby to equip the church to reach people for Christ. Many faithful servants carried out the work of God in the earth. Although many faithful servants were used to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Saul, whose name was changed to Paul, was the most influential. Before he was converted, Paul took great pleasure in persecuting and killing Christians. After his conversion he went to the ultimate extreme of loving God and preaching his word with power, fervency and the Spirit of the true and living God. In this book the main emphasis was in Acts 1:8, when the disciples were told by Jesus to wait until they had been empowered by the Holy Spirit from on high to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts chapters 1-7 record the apostles being Christ's witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea. Acts chapter 8 records the apostles being Christ's witnesses in Samaria. Acts chapters 9-28 record the apostles being Christ's witnesses "to the ends of the earth."

Jesus Christ, started having gatherings. (Matt 5:1,2 )- for one example.
This was moved to a temple.
Which showed glory to God. (Hab 2:20) one ex.
Then, the people started to gather, continually and on regular occurrences.
Then, people(s) started translating the Hebrew and Greek bible, and based on there own personal translation, different religions came about.
Thus, different churches.
How do you know which one is correct?
How do you know which one to attend?
The correct religion belief was taught by Christ. In which, you have to ask yourself, which religion reflects Christ the best?
One example, is that Christ went door to door, declaring the good news of the kingdom.
There is a religion that does that today, JW's.
And JW's dont have churches. They have Kingdom Halls.
Its a place of study, and learning, as well as a place of worship.
if you have any other q's dont hessitate to email.

depends...
you could say the church started with Abraham... because it is the fulfillment of the promise of God to bless people form all nations through Abraham which happened through Christ
you could say it was through Moses, since gOD PROMISED MOSES THAT His people would be a kingdom of priests a holy nation, fulfilled in the believers in Christ
in the end it was though Christ... Christ is the author and finisher of the faith according to the Book of Hebrews... that would be the most complete answer
actually... when God gathered the dry lands together and seperated the land from the sea during creation week... he congregated them in Hebrew
the English word for church is from the word Kurk.. or...Kuriaken for Lord.. since the church believes Jesus is Lord

kind of a broad topic. Worship to God has been around since man was created. When God (his name is Jehovah, found at Ps. 83:18) created Adam & Eve he wanted them to live forever and worship him in a proper way, sadly it didn't end up that way, Satan, a rebellious angel that God also created wanted to become independent of God and also told Eve that she too could be like God if she ate the fruit that God told her not to, that set off the chain of events that led to their eventual death and the reason why we die.
Years later after Adam & Eve had children we get to the days of Noah. Im sure you know the story about Noahs Ark. Well by that time there were many on the earth and Noah and his family were righteous and wanted to please God and worshipped him the way he wanted to, but there were also alot of others who were involved in practices of worship that God did not approve of, and the earth was getting bad, so that is why Jehovah brought the Flood, to destroy the wicked, yet he saved Noah and his family because they did the right things in God's eyes.
Over the years there were many kings on the earth and different rulers and lands of people that worshipped, there wasn't exactly a "church" but in Bible times there were temples that people worshipped. Again after a certain amount of time, false worship, worship God did not approve of crept into some of these cities, yet there have always been those who have worshipped God the way he wants. God does not want us to worship Idols, wants us to recogonize him as the Creator, his Son as Jesus, and the holy spirit as Gods active force or power. He does not want us to believe the false things that some of these other religions that crept into the congregations there like hellfire, and reincarnation, these are not things that were part of God's original worship, back from the beginning.
When Jesus came, he kind of established the Christian Congregation, he also took a stand and threw different ones out of the temples who were practicing false worship and trying to bring praise to themselves. He worked hard at preaching with his diciples about God's Kingdom, the one God wanted to bring about from the beginning, and still will, thats what Jesus preached about, was the coming of God's Kingdom (the lords prayer, you pray for the Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.)
There you are praying for Jesus (the King of the Kingdom) to bring about the blessings on earth, thats where the bible says we are going to live forever (look the chapter of Psalms 37, its great)
Look thru some of the Gospel Accts (Matthew Mark, Luke & John) Thats where the accounts of Jesus' life on earth are and talks about why he came here, what he did when he was here and what he will do for us in the future.
Your topic for school is a good one, but its more than just where did the church get started. The bible talks about Satan being the ruler of this system here on the earth, we can see that is true because of all of the bad things going on, when God takes his power back, and destroys the Satan the devil, these bad things just won't be here anymore. Satan has also confused those people who do want to learn more about the Bible, has been the major part of the false beliefs that have become a part of so many "churches".
Jehovah God is the one who instituted the Christian Congregation, Satan has confused people and made ones stem off from that original set of laws and true beliefs. All of us should really strive to study the Bible to find out what is really in store for us.
You're doing a good Job, I hope your paper goes well. Here is a link to look up some scriptures if you don't have a bible handy.
Psalms 37:11: But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
Psalms 37:29 The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.
