Basically that even though you may see someone accomplish something great or endure something, you never really see the emotional struggle or trails they endure while working on the outside. Personal emotions are usually kept bottled up very well to show courage and hide fear.
And "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a great movie and "Fight Club"

What you see is the action of the hero. What you do not see is the battle on whether or not to react.
Many people see a problem and drive by, turn away, do not have time to stop. Well everyone has the same 24 hours. Those who do stop and take action, have a battle on whether or not to act. It is the decision TO ACT that makes them the hero. The actions are a side effect.

I believe that it means that your most important battle, is the one going on within yourself. It's you deciding what your fighting for, what you stand for, and who you really are. Even for a hero.
Lord of the Rings would probably follow this quote. Frodo is struggling with the ring, and because it's such a burden, there is a battle going on in him. He trying to stay focused and not letting the ring's power take over him.

It very simply means that even heroes have problems and sometimes an internal struggle to do the right thing over the choice of the easy thing.
Any of the following movies would follow the quote:
The Punisher
Spider Man I, II, and III
Superman
The Hulk
X-Men
Batman
Kill Bill I and II
The Professional
And a host of others.

Basically, the heroic battle that you see means it's a physicall battle. But by "goes on within him or herself" it means that the part you don't see is going on inside; it's the mental battle.

It means that a hero'a battle is an internal conflict, not one where they fight other people. So, Frodo fought all kinds of things, but his most epic battle was keeping the ring safe from himself.

Its the battle of good and evil that rages on within all of us. We can choose to do good deeds, think good thoughts, and say good words, which are hard, or we can slip into the realm of immorality. Choosing that which would help others vs yourself, extending a hand to a friend in need vs ignoring him/her, or saying no to drugs or acohol vs. falling under the peer pressure are all examples of this battle.
Spiderman 3 is the best example of this.

The inner battle is overcoming the fear and reservations. If you are scared to do something but you feel you must, then you have a battle within yourself to overcome the fear.

it means that even if you think the hero is great for what he did for you to be a hero, he has greater battles to fight in his personal fight to be his own hero. If i were to pick a movie to hear that quote--maybe a sean connery flick or that mel gibson movie where he dies after fighting for his kingdom
