Hey, does anybody know of a good surround sound systems for under $300? I don't really need a DVD player; I just want the best possible audio quality and don't care about lots of fancy features. Any help would be appreciated.

Good Luck!

EDIT- If you can up your budget, sound quality will go way up. Check out this forum thread for budget home theater gear that's better than HTIB:

Nothing! Do yourself a BIG favor. If you are "poor" and cannot afford a real HT system- go look at a 2 channel stereo system for the same amount of money. I bet you are amazed at the sound quality differences. 2 decent channels will kick the you-know-what out of 5 bad channels any day! Another idea is how I got my first system when I was in college. Go buy a receiver now for $300. Go back in 6 months when you have the money and pick up 2 main speakers for $300. Go back again, and pick up a sub for $300, so on and so forth until complete. Going super-cheap just so you can buy a system now will always disappoint. The materials and workmanship on a $300 "system" just aren't good enough. Think of it this way, would you drive a $300 car? Why not- do you think that it would not perform at that price point? What if someone told you it was a Honda, and we all know Honda is a good brand, right? It's just too little to pay for a car in good working order- you know by the price that it's a hunk-o-junk... same here...

Hi,unfortunately a home theater for $300 is just not possible.Prices have dropped dramatically over the past 5 years Back then you were lucky to get a good one for $3000!I. If you definitely want something, a home theater in a box is possible but it will only be a toy. I think it is best to save until you can buy each part at a time .This is what most of us did and you will then have a good one. This is how i put mine together.
Have you got a DVD or don't you want one .Are you only going to listen to music with multi channel sound. The $300 would by some average speakers if that is all you are after.

You won't find a good one for under $300. My suggestion is to look for your best deal on a Home Theater in a Box (HTIB) system on eBay. There are some reasonably decent Harmon Kardon systems selling there right now for just a little over your budget.

"Good" and "under $300" are only compatible if you add "old" and "used" to your description. Many high-end hi-fi stores buy and sell used equipment. You could probably get your first speaker for $300. Hey, it's a start.

One decent new digital surround receiver. A bunch of big old speakers from yard sales and thrift stores. Upgrade when you have more money... add a subwoofer, then a set of matched surround speakers.
