Iraq invaded Quwait on August 2, 1990. On that day, the US, in order to provide a show of force, deployed elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, with follow-on forces arriving in theater over the next several months.
On January 17th, 1991, Desert Shield ended with the beginning of combat operations against Iraq, primarily in the form of major air strikes and Tomahawk missile attacks against troop deployments, communications sites, and air bases. This was the beginning of Operation Desert Storm.
The ground war began on February 23, 1991, and lasted only 100 hours, ending with a cease-fire at midnight of February 27th-28th. During this time Iraqi forces retreated out of Kuwait, which fulfilled the objectives set by coalition leadership for the prosecution of Desert Storm.

During the first Persian Gulf War Operation Desert Shield was the build up of US and Coalition forces to prevent and deter Iraq from invading Saudi Arabia. Also is was the hope the Iraq would see this massive world response and pull out of Kuwait. This lasted about 6 months.
Operation Desert Storm was the shift from a defensive tactic to an offensive tactic. The US and Coalition forces began their attack on Iraqi forces to drive them out of Kuwait and liberate it. This only lasted approximently 6 weeks.

There really isn't a comparison.....Desert Shield was the build-up, presence showing phase, which turned into Desert Storm once combat actions began.
