9's a lot, but if you want to, go for it. Just have 9 groomsmen. I think it looks strange when there's that many bridesmaids and only like 4 groomsmen. You can always have some of them do readings or sing.
Another thing to keep in mind is this. A lot of people don't want to be bridesmaids and only say yes because they feel obligated to. I've met plenty of bridesmaids in this same situation. It's not that they don't love the bride, cause they wouldn't feel obligated if they didn't! It's just that it's a considerable expense and a lot of work, and some people would rather sit back and enjoy your wedding without having a job to do. Also, do you really need 9 people buzzing around you the whole day? If you have a feeling that some of your friends or family are more the more low-key type who would rather sit back, relax, and hang out with the rest of the guests, then maybe you don't need to ask them. They might actually sigh with relief.

If you are having a big wedding that would be okay, but remember to try to pair each of them with a groomsman. You can have more bridesmaid than groomsmen, but the women might feel out of place. Remember you will need someone to stand by the guest book, you'll need a few people to cut and serve the cake and serve the punch. If you're having a buffet style dinner without caterers you'll need someone to keep trays filled. I know you probably dont want to have your closer friends do this cuz you dont want to be showing favorites. Congrats.

you can have as many as you want. i have 2 jr flowergirls, and 2 flowergirls, 6 bridesmaids and 2 jr bridesmaids, and 1 maid of honor so my wedding is pretty huge. If you truly want all these people in your wedding and they mean that much to you than go for it because this is the happiest day of your life.

If you can afford to have that many bridesmaids go for it.
If you cannot you have to narrow down who you want to be part of the wedding party.
Perhaps have the ones you didn't choose do a reading.

when my niece had gotten married last year, she had a ton of friends, but the only people she chose to be her bridesmaid was her sister and her sister in law. I think families should be the only ones in the bridal party and maybe a few of your closest friends. I know that you wanted 9 of your friends, but out of those 9, which are the closest to you???

we were in a botanical garden last summer and saw a wedding party taking pictures and there were 19 (!!) bridesmaids, 19 groomsmen, and 5 flowergirls! It was huge! So if you want all of your 9 close friends in the wedding, I say go for it. :)

Don't have 9 friends plus family. That's tacky. If it's that hard for you to choose, just have your family members be your bridesmaids. Your friends will have no reason to get upset about it.- They'll still be at the wedding. And you can still get pictures taken with them.

You should try to balance it with the groomsmen and the overall guest list.
9 wouldn't be too many if it is an extremely large wedding - several hundred guests and IF you have 9 groomsmen.
You could do a smaller bridal party - perhaps family only to make it easy to explain - and have the rest do special readings, etc.
Good Luck

Do you want friends to be the highlight of your wedding or you?? Just make it your sisters and maybe 2 flower girls .. no more than 5 total ..
or your pics will look real tacky .. if you only do your sisters then your friends won't feel slighted .

Nine seems a little extravagant. I think 4-5 is about perfect. Try including them in other ways (readings, personal attendant, etc.).
