find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

150 lbs or under: 1 lb of fat a week.
175 lbs to 150 lbs: 1.5 lbs of fat a week.
225 lbs to 175 lbs: 2 lbs of fat a week.
225+ lbs: 2.5 lbs of fat a week.
This of course is after the initial period of losing most of your water weight which happens the first few weeks of dieting and training, which can be a quick 25 lbs for 225+ or a quick 10 lbs for someone around 180 lbs. Results vary.
You can also lose more pounds quickly at first if you sacrifice your muscle weight as well, but you will slow down later on. Just remember that the more lean muscle mass you have the more calories you burn. 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat. So if you lose muscle, you're losing some edge on burning the fat.

You can safely lose between 0.5 and 2 pounds a week. So I would plan on a pound a week.

It depends on how much you weigh, how tall you are, and how much weight you want to lose. Also, how many Calories will you eat, and are you going to exercise?
