you will need to spend at least 500 for a MTB, and 600 for a decent road bike
as the other posts stated, NEVER go to Walmart or any store like that
go to your local bike shops and check out KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant
and make sure you "get fitted" for the right size and set up

Bikes from Walmart / K-Mart / Target are all JUNK. You might get a used mountain bike that's decent for $150 that's used and a few years old. A new entry level bike will cost you double that price.

Wal-Mart bikes are never worth fixing and are not reliable. Try going to a local bike shop and see if they have any used bikes, any good bike shop will stand behind what they sell. If you buy a bike from wal-mart you'll be lucky if it dosen't fall apart or even if it was put together correctly.6

For that price bracket, you are not going to get a viable mountain bike. Go for a traditional set up road machine, single or simple gears, perhaps an old 10 speed. It will probably have a steel frame, but that is the best you can do new. Failing that, go for a better spec, but last years model, e-bay or second hand.
