The Strategies generally were know as "Napoleonic", at least up until the trench warfare which became the norm outside of Richmond and Petersburg in the last year of the war.

If I understand your question. I think you want to know that the strategy of battle for each side was to meet the enemy on the conventional front and defeat them. The North's objective was to remove the confederacy government that was established in the South. The Confederacy's objective was to March on Washington and impose their freedom from Northern rule would remain. As far as how the battles that ensued both sides felt each other out via horse cavalry recon and when the moment was right tried superior firepower to defeat the enemy encountered.
