if you need a fusion then i would only exercise under a drs supervision. I had a back fusion and the recovery is horrible. took almost 9 mths. If you are not in in serious pain that you can not live with or can not move your lower legs then surgery will probably help. If not take this operation very serious. and only have it done by a highly qualified neuro dr. I worked in a recovery room and orthopedic drs pt never did as well as the neuro dr. This is my view but decide for yourself and do not think you will not have pain after you heal. YOU WILL>

go get the book "pain free" by pete Egoscue. Do the routines in there. Also a bowen therapist or Egoscue therapist may be able to help you prevent the surgery.

Swimming is the best exercise for your back. I wouldn't overdo it and stay in the pool to long. you should ask your surgeon what exercises are best prior to the operation .
