Can we prove, beyond a reasonable shred of doubt, that there is no creator, or at the very least a greater purpose in life?

We can only prove that stories in the bible are not accurate, but does that change the message of the bible? Corrupt religious leaders have used the bible to control the masses, and there are many things in the bible that are flawed because of this. However, if you look past this can you not see the truth within the bible (or any religious book)?

mantazma, "God created us in his image". So there you go. We havea picture of a god who is like us, except perfect in all ways.

bookish, we can't prove aliens don't exist among us. In fact I have to believe that somewhere out there in that great big universe, life exists on another planet. And we can prove there is no 10th planet orbiting our sun, because in order for any object to be considered a planet it has to meet certain criterias, and so far only 8 fit that. If you want to consider Pluto a planet, then don't exclude the other 2 dwarf planets we have discovered.

swbarnes, nothing has been written in the name of the FSM. No great books have been published... And it was created blatently ridiculous to make any claims of a godly nature seem absurd. Regardless of any of those claims, there is no strong foundation supporting FSM.

No. Why would we need to be certain?

There's no evidence for gods, so there aren't any.

Grendel, that's simply false.

If you think man could have written the Bible, I challenge anyone to write a book even today that will tell my great, great, great grandson what will be happening in his day.
Sixty-six of some of the most fascinating books that one will ever read. Not a book on any shelf compares to the Bible.

If the King James Bible is so flawed, who flawed the Dead Sea Scrolls? The Scrolls proved the Biblical accuracy. To know Jesus one doesn't need the New Testament. The Old Testament tells us plainly that Christ was coming in the flesh and he would die on a tree marred beyond belief.

I know you do not want to see the truth and you are blinded to it, but if you would truly research the history of the Bible you will know the truth about it.

The few little flaws in the Bible do not change the main message that from Genesis to Revelation it is all about Jesus Christ who died for you and me so we could get eternal life back that Adam lost in the Garden of Eden when he disobeyed God.

There will always be corrupt religious leaders - get over them.
Get a Bible and learn about your heavenly Father.

Atheist's need to get a grip. they cannot prove there in no God. they can only try to sway the believer's by presenting faulty logic based on a text that was written in the scope of understanding of the universe of the people of that time. The atheist does not attempt to extrapolate to bring the level of understanding up to the present, but only poo poo's everything because it does not jive with their "agenda" for their life and the world as they see it. You can present string theories, big bangs, info paradox's,mini black holes etc. all day long , but at the end of the day you do not know why everything exists rather than not.And don't give me the malarkey about science being on track to discover all the secrets of the universe, its a closed loop system which has to validate itself to advance, which leads to outlandish("educated" guesses} theories.

You cannot disprove a negative. Can you prove Yoda does not exist? Gollum? Spider-Man?

Of course, that tells you nothing about how many gods there are , anything they did or thought, or whether any part of any religious text is true, so it's completely useless, and guessing is exactly the same as making up stories.

The Bible is false and its various gods can be discarded.

The gods of the other religions have been discarded ages ago, mostly after the Christians mined them for everything they were worth and attributed those aspects to Jesus.

If there is a 'God' out there he/she/it probably isn't concerned with our sex lives and he/she/it has never bothered to contact us.

And I seriously doubt that it needs human currency for any reason.

Or Worship.

P.S. But I have to admit I have a preference for Lord Ganesh. There's just something about an Anthropomorphic Elephant posing like Buddha, with extra arms, that screams, "I'm Real!"

So we are supposed to find a perfect all powerful being that can create the universe in a flawed book if we read between the lines of the flaws?

Does that make any sense to you? Because it doesn't to me. I'd never explain, for example, Newton's laws of motion in such terms as: The formulas are inaccurate, but if you fudge them a little bit you'll see what he meant.

You can't prove a negative. Prove there are no aliens living among us. Prove there's no 10th planet orbiting our sun. There is truth in a lot of books. There's truth in my car owner's manual. So what?

If Science is your god then there is no certainty as to whether or not there is a god or gods. Saying there is no god because there is no evidence to the matter doesn't mean there isn't a god directing the affairs of the universe.
God will always be a matter of faith (hoping for that which we cannot see or know, which is true) in this life.
We live to be tested to see if we will do all things whatsoever the Lord God shall command us.
Truth is only found through diligent study, prayer, faith and actually doing something with it.
For example: the law of tithing described in the old testament of the Holy Bible wasn't given because God needed money. It was given to see if we would be obedient and in being obedient we would exercise faith in God and finding that by exercising this faith we can and do receive the blessings God promised to pour out.
Truth is found only in doing.
Remember, those who want to know the truth that God does exist yet refuse to lift a finger to find it out for themselves by being obedient to the law and teachings He has set forth in holy writ are akin to sign seekers. Even if the things spoken of in the Bible were set before their eyes as proof it would do nothing to sway their allegiance to any supreme being; though they may believe for awhile but when difficulty arises for them then they continue to disbelieve there is a god.
I know there is a God as a matter of personal revelation. No, God didn't show himself to me or give me a great wonder or sign. I know because I have tried to keep His commandments and when I have done this I have been blessed with the things I need, I have been comforted, I have been more at peace, I have been made a better human being by doing my best to obey God's commandments and repenting of my sins, depending upon the merits of Christ's suffering in Gethsemane and on the Cross of Golgotha. I have hope because of the resurrection of Jesus the Christ has and will bring to pass the resurrection of all people into a state of immortality whether we were good or bad. Because of this I know there is a God in Heaven.
Every one will know someday there really is a God, unfortunately it will be too late for those who continued to reject God and His son and His law when they had it. They will not be able to claim the blessings God wanted to give them while in this life because they would not do what was required to know God.
It is not enough to know of God, we need to know God and His character and become even as He is. Jesus Christ commanded us to "be ye therefore perfect even as your Father, which is in heaven, is perfect." That is a tall order yet he said that it is life eternal to "know" God and His son.
Being perfect even as our Father in Heaven is perfect is nothing more nor less than becoming as God is.
I am still dumbfounded that many Christians refuse to accept this concept and call it blaspmeny when in reality the scriptures are explicit on the matter. Of course when one doesn't seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost as their teacher(st John 14:26) they will remain in confusion as to what the Holy Bible says.
I hope this helps.

No you can not be certain there is no God, of course not. Many will use examples like "you can't prove there are not pink elephants in my garage." But we can imagine pink elephants, as we know what pink is and we know what elephants, are but God is not a concept, for an early human to come up with God it would have been amazing, because that would require him to think of something that he had no basis, something he had never seen.

Basically the concept of God, cannot be compared with things like pink elephants, and spaghetti monsters, because we can picture those, we cannot comprehend an idea like God in the same way as these.

Can you picture a spider and a man, there you go, you got spiderman, now try picturing something that does not come from something you have ever seen, it is impossible because humans have to picture everything, and God is too great to fit in a picture

Most scientists feel it is not possible to either prove or disprove the existence of a Supreme Being. It is a view rejected by atheism, although not by Christians,or any other religion that I know of,most of whom take the position that it is a matter of belief and faith and that the question of proof is therefore irrelevant. Only the atheist defies science on this score.

Technically, we cannot be certain, as you cannot prove that something does NOT exist.

However, it is easy, via logic and philosophy, to demonstrate tha tthe Abrahamic God does not and cannot exist.
