I found a duckling stranded on the road today. I know of a bird rehabilitation facility who would take him, but I would like to know what I can do to care for it in the mean time, seeing as it may only be a couple days before i can safely get it there.

What can I feed it and how?
Should i include a shallow water dish as well?

thanks!

I would say, that they need purina start and grow, a predator-free pen, and very frequent water changes. They eat, drink and poop like crazy.

Go to the bird rehabilitation center and ask them how to take care of your duck. Also ask them if it is even remotely likely a person who is not an ornithologist could keep a duck alive more than a couple weeks. What the percentage chance of a person who is not a bird expert could keep it alive more than 10 days. If it is more than a 10% chance then I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. The best thing to do of course is to give it to the bird rehabilitation center and not try raising the bird yourself, right? But going there with the duck pen and paper in hand and asking to speak to the right people and gaining the right information by asking them the right questions is key to your desire to give the duck a good home. Good luck!!

Use a heavy ceramic water dish that he can't knock over. He will climb into it and poop in it so you will need to change it often. If you have a pet store near by go and buy some starter duck food. If not then small amounts of bread will work. Also spinach and lettuce. You can try feeding him bugs you find in the yard. My ducks wouldnt eat bugs til they were full grown so your duckling may not either. Theres a group here on yahoo groups called petducksrus. Join them. They have a wealth of knowledge and someone in the group may live near you and take the duckling off your hands.

If you can find another duck family with duckling about the same size as the one you found, give it to them. Ducks are wonderful at adapting and taking care of abandoned babies.
Otherwise the information you already received is great.

Go to a local farm store and purchase some layer crumbles not medicated mineral.
He will need shavings in the bottom of his home. A water dish with clean water. His home will need to be changed about every other day. He will need to be kept under a light. They love attention.
