My dentist just recommended it for my daughter. Her teeth are straight, with no gaps. The frenum connects just above her gum line.

Depends, if it is really pulling hard on your gums it could cause recession of the facial gingiva over the teeth in that area. So it may still need to be done. Recession exposes root surfaces that have no enamel causing sensitivity and it is easier to get cavities on root surfaces b/c there is no enamel and that area is very difficult to fill if needed.

Assuming that your child has normal speech and that she can retract her lip easily enough to allow routine tooth brushing, there is seldom a reason to remove the frenum. That being said, a fibrous, wide, and short frenum may be of concern especially if it connects close to the neck of the front teeth and your child has muscular lips. That sort of frenum may "pull" on the gums and cause periodontal problems later in life.
You might consider a second opinion. .
I hope this is useful.

This would be difficult to answer without seeing your daughter. Before having this procedure done, I would suggest you have a second opinion by another dentist.

At sixteen she is nearly finished with her growth pattern so it shouldn't present a problem now. If you feel there is nothing wrong with her speech, smile or teeth, it may not be a "necessary" treatment. But once done, it can't be undone. So, it’s better to be safe with two opinions, than for your daughter to regret having it done the rest of her life. Years ago labial frenectomies were done all of the time, now we know better. Hope I've been of some help and good luck!

CHER,
AS A DENTAL STUDENT I NEEDED AN, UPPER FRENULECTOMY BECAUSE I HAD FIBROUS TISSUE THAT NEEDED REMOVAL PRIOR TO HAVING BRACES. I DON'T SEE A REASON FOR YOUR DAUGHTER'S SURGERY FOR ANY CLINICAL REASONS SINCE HER SMILE IS STRAIGHT AND SHE DOESN'T NEED BRACES. YOU WOULD BENEFIT FROM ANOTHER OPINION.
