Who is Jerry Falwell and why should I care that he is dead?

Jerry Falwell was a televangelist, to put it in mild terms. The only reason to care about his death was that he was a fellow human being, that's all. He was no one particually important in normal peoples lives.

Jerry Falwell was a Fundamentalist preacher who rose to international fame with his organization, The Moral Majority. You should care who he was because he exerted an influence upon right-wing American politics, which resulted in decisions that were felt globally. He opened the way for an unprecedented infusion of religion into politics (at least, unprecedented since the Colonial era). Whether or not you care that he is dead is irrelevant. He was a player in international affairs, and his influence, for good or ill, will be felt for a very long time to come. If you have even the slightest interest in what's happening in the world, Falwell's name should become familiar to you.

The Rev.Jerry Falwell founded Liberty University, a Christian college and seminary, and was one of the few men in America that tried to keep God in our society. He was not perfect, and he ruffled some feathers. I know a man who was crucified for speaking truth about 2007 years ago. That man was perfect, but He was still killed. God bless Jerry Falwell, and trust me, He is blessing him right now.

You should be celebrating that Jerry lived a long fruitful life, fought the devil vehemently, and has received his reward. I hope to do the same someday.
