There is a plethora of .22 centrefire cartridges firing bullets of about the same size as the .22R/F but at much higher velocity. Those usually encountered in Britain are, in ascending order of power, the .22 Hornet, the .222 Remington , the .223 Remington (which is the same as the 5.56mm Nato cartridge) and the 22/250 Remington. Very occasionally you may come across a .220 Swift.

You may also meet or be asked about the .17 Remington which fulfills the same function using a lighter bullet of around 20 grains weight at about 4000 feet per second muzzle velocity.

Don’t be fooled by the names; all but the .17 Remington fire bullets of .224 inch diameter. Bullet weight in the .22 calibres may range from 40 to about 70 grains. (There are 437.5 grains to the ounce and 7000 grains to the pound).

So far, the fastest publicly known bullet is a 30 grain Berger bullet in the .22-243 Middlestead.

Hauling along at a SMOKING 5278 fps, it probably burns through barrels at an incredible rate!

Reloadersnest.com is a great site for looking up all kinds of loads. Some guys with lots of money are doing some pretty crazy stuff!

I believe the .22 Cheetah is still the fastest load. Yes, it's a wildcat (not a factory loading) but you didn't specify. It's a handload consisting of a .308 (NATO) bench rest case necked down to accept a .223 projectile. With a 50 gr SP projectile loaded with 46.0 grs. of IMR 4064 it attains a velocity of approx 4285 fps. The only problem with the round is that it can have a tendency to shatter the projectile as it leaves the barrel if it is loaded on the "hot" side. A friend chronographed his loadings in the 4450+ fps range. He also replaced barrels quite often!

So many answers of people who have not a clue ! Do some research before you give bad info please.

As far as I can find out, like the last guy said the Ruger .204 should be the fastest. .204 Ruger (33 BTSP) 4225 fps. If there is a faster I was not able to find out.

Good Luck & Happy Shooting !

DT98ACE,

Very good research on the .17. My statement was not dirrected towards your answer however, I understand how it may have been seen that way. Once again, good job !

I guess you mean rifle bullets?
No specific bullet is labelled as the fastest, though very few go over 4000fps due to the physics, of the heat generated through the barrel and the air. Most of these are smaller calibre, again due to physics........less mass = greater speed.

the .17 Remington Fireball shoots around 4,150 FPS. A 22-250 shoots around 3700 FPS. A 220 swift is around in there too.

A Steven Gerrard shot from 25 yards, that is easily the fastest bullet.
