My birth certificate has the wrong date of birth, which I just discovered when I ordered it to use for applying for a passport. I was born in the U.S. and am a U.S. citizen, so it is not really an immigration issue. I assume I will have to hire a lawyer to help me get the the date of birth ammended. What kind of lawyer specializes in this type of issue? Thanks for your help!

No, you don't use a lawyer and you definetely don't need to go to a county courthouse. You can do all of it by mail for the most part. The process depends on the state where you were born. You will need to contact the Vital Statistics or Vital Records office in the state where you were born. Search for their website online and then find a phone number. I know that in Florida, where I live, all you need is a notarized affidavit stating your correct date of birth, and they will change your birth certificate to show the correct date. It may be more difficult to do in other states.

Just go to the county clerks office and tell them of the error and you can get am amended certificate. No lawyer needed. I did it as they had my name spelled wrong and my birth date wrong. It only cost me $5, but that has been a few years ago so it might cost more now.

You don't need a lawyer, you can deal with it yourself at the courthouse.

It will take some time and paperwork though.

Maybe your parents lied to you? I'm sure there's hospital records to prove it.
