You should never take medication for any condition other than the one it was prescribed for. See your doctor, as there are other medications that can be used for headahces, and headaches can be a symptom of something extremely serious. With that disclaimer, here's my answer to your question. I'm a chronic pain sufferer, so I have quite a bit of experience with narcotics.
First of all, there is nothing called "the percodane family" of drugs. There is Percodan, which is Oxycodone and aspirin, and Percocet, which is Oxycodone with Tylenol. Oxycodone is a very effective painkiller. If taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, you stand less than a 1% chance of addiction (some say less than 5%, but I have read less than 1; either way, it's a miniscule chance). People get addicted when they take the medication for longer than prescribed or when they don't have pain. Long term use of narcotics leads to DEPENDANCE, which is vastly different from addiction. Addiction is a behavior issue, characterizedby a preocupation with the procurement, hoarding, and abuse of drugs for non-medicinal purposes. "Drug Seeking" behavior is very common to addicts. Tolerance and physical dependance in pain patients are not signs of addiction. Abuse is characterized by misuse for non-medical purposes. Narcotics are the oldest and safest form of pain medication available, if taken properly. Oxycodone, which is what is in the Percocet, along with Tylenol, is a moderately strong painkiller (and is the one that works best for me) for moderate to moderately-severe pain . Darvocet is Propoxyphene and Tylenol. It is a narcotic, but a very mild narcotic, really not much more effective than Tylenol by itself.
As I said, you really should never take medications for conditions other than those that they were originally prescribed for, and you should really see a doctor as headaches can be very serious. However, if you are really in pain and can't or won't get to the ER or doctor, take the medication that correlates to your level of pain. If it is a mild headache, try the Darvocet. If you're really in bad pain, take the Percocet. Either way, after you take it, lie down in a dark, quiet room, because they will make you drowsy and the quiet darkness will help the headache. And use them to tide you over until you can see a doctor ONLY--- and like I said, I recommend seeing the doc first. Use them as directed on the prescription bottle, and only if needed. Do not drive or do anything else dangerous until you know how drowsy they'll make you. Try something like Excedrin first before you head for the narcotics.

Darvocet is much weaker than Percocet. To help you measue this, vicodin is stronger then Darvocet and weaker than Percocet.
I would try the Davocet first. If it doesn't help then I would try the Percocet. Follow the directions on the prescriptons. Usually dosing is something like this: take 1 to 2 pills every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. You should see a doctor as soon as possible but you shouldn't suffer in pain either.
Painkillers like Percocet are used to break headache cycles especially in migraines when triptans (imitrex) medication is ineffective or contraindicated.

Major difference in the two meds. Darvocet is an extremely mild painkiller, for very mild pain. Darvocet is propoxyphene napsylate. Percocet is oxycodone. The percocet is much stronger and much more addictive than darvocet. Both drugs are in two completely different narcotic schedules.
If standard OTC meds such as tylenol, advil, or aleve don't help your headache, I'd try taking one Darvocet first. If that doesn't help it within 45 minutes - an hour, you might take another darvocet.
You said the percocet was prescribed for kidney stones. Percocet (oxycodone) is generally prescribed for moderate to severe pain. I would take a percocet for a headache as a LAST resort.

I'm an RN. Darvocet is not as strong as Lortab (aka Vicodin, Hydrocodone) and Percocet is even stronger than Lortab.

I don't know about Darvocet, but a do know that Percocet is extremely addictive and must be used with caution. I watched someone detox off it, he'd been given it for a back injury and got addicted, believe me you don't want to go through that, not pretty.

Percocet is very addictive, and basically used for surgical pain on a short term basis. Darvocet is milder but if I were you I would go to the doctor about your headaches. They make some medicine especially for head aches if you have miagrains. Have you tried extra strength tylenol?
