It's worse for a Hindu to eat meat because reincarnation is canonical. When you eat meat, you're eating someone who wasn't a very good person during the person life.

Buddhists go vegetarian because the Eightfold Path has a part that directs us to act in a right, complete, whole, or holistic manner (depending on translation). Part of that is to not cause suffering. Unlike monotheistic religions, no distinction is made between humans and other animals.

Yes, many Buddhists eat meat (usually lay people). Others don't (usually monks or nuns). Most meat-eaters only eat meat that was killed humanely and without suffering when possible. Some make no distinction.

Buddhists follow a 'middle way'. In effect this means balancing choices and actions between extremes.

So in countries where there is little choice but to eat meat they do so, since the alternative would be to starve. Tibet comes to mind, since there was often little arable land up in the mountains.

But in order to avoid causing suffering to other sentient beings then following a vegetarian diet would be the ideal.

Well, that's the way I understand it.

Buddhists everywhere make a choice to be vegetarian or not. Most Tibetan Buddhist lamas will tell you that it's better for you to be vegetarian, but if you have to eat meat, do it as little as necessary. It's not "worse than", it's the same concept of "ahimsa" or non-harm.

Personally I choose to be strictly vegetarian with vegan tendencies but that is MY choice... I pass absolutely NO judgement on others who don't.
