Four counts. A shot is 2 ounces. You can practice by putting water in an empty liquer bottle with pourer top. Practice pouring into a clear glass measuring cup (with ounces on the measure).

** Tin Can Sailor is right. A shot is 1.5 ounces, not two (although you'd be a very popular bartender with the more generous count...but not with your boss) It's been a while since that was my career, but unless your establishment uses measured shots, I still hold that practice with water and a calibrated measurer makes perfect...and great tips! Remember to know a little about each regular and always have a gimmick -- good listener, great jokes, good at remembering special things about each customer. That, as much or more than the drinks, keeps them coming back to see you personally and getting the great tips. They want to feel at home with you and the bar, so the more you feel comfortable at the establishment, and create relationships with your customers, the more they want to come in, bring their friends, and grow your business. Good luck to you; one day soon you'll own a place of your own that people will think of as their own personal "Cheers"

justme has got the idea. That is the way I got down, practice. But for me a 3 count gives a 1 1/2 oz. shot.

It depends on your pour. How heavy-handed or slow at pouring are you? Practice pouring water into a shot glass until you have your count down. Mine is a 4 count for a shot.

Two. Or, use a jigger. The small side is half-ounce, the large is one-ounce and there are one and a half ounces in a shot. Rock on!
