Sin is divided into different categories. There are venial, which are smaller yet still can slowly wound your relationship with God a lot, like masturbation. Then there are mortal sins, like murder and abortion, that severely cut you off from God. God's unlimited mercy can forgive all sins though, if you truly turn to His mercy. Look at the Divine Mercy Devotion. :)
