The single biggest thing you can do is go lighter on the gas pedal (on long trips, I can average more than 30mpg in my sports car, though when at a track day that number drops to 7mpg). Moving towards being smoother on the throttle as well as the brakes will help keep the engine working less, and thus use less gas.
Next, check tire pressures. While higher pressures can have a negitive impact on grip and balance, it will reduce rolling resistance and make some improvements on milage.
If possible (depening on the specific car, which oil you are already using, and the temperature range where you live), go to a lighter grade motor oil.
Lastly, check your air filter if this has not been replaced and is past it's normal life.

Drive as defensively as possible. No hard acceleration: when the light turns green, EASE on the gas. Don't do any hard breaking either: coast as often as you can.
Check the pressure in your tires: if the pressure is too low, that will hurt your gas mileage. Also make sure your air filter is clean.
When you're on the highway, don't speed. Most cars are designed to operate most efficiently lower speeds. Speeding will almost always use more gas.

I don't think you can fix it unless you go to a mechanic or something. If your don't live to far from your work, ride your bike. It's better for the enviroment, anyway.
