Most psychiatrists these days do not do therapy. They will have an hour or so meeting with you and write a script. Then they will meet you once a month for 15 minutes to make sure you are not suffering from any side effects.

To beat mental illness problems, you need meds and counseling.

Before going to a psychiatrist, I would recommend seeing a counselor to help you determine if medication is needed. Psychiatrists can provide medication, but often cost much more money and are able to devote less time to their patients. Counselors/therapists are able to dedicate more time to learning about your history, current problems, and coming up with a diagnosis. You are also much more likely to find a counselor through an agency that offers a sliding-fee scale. I'm not familiar with the services in Tacoma, but I would start by looking in the yellow pages under "counselor" and you will probably find a community mental health center.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle, has a HUGE mental health section. For a really good one you should try that.

counselors are NOT medical doctors, Psychiatrists are. I would check with your own family doctor and see if they can recommend someone.
