Do they acknowledge my letter reporting someone?

2007-05-16 09:34:43 · 4 answers · asked by Anonymous in Business & Finance Taxes United States

This was a business I reported, and a few weeks later received a letter from them acknowledging my correspondence, but their acknowledgment referenced a 1040 from Dec. 2004. SO I am wondering if it is related to my report. I called and they had no record of a correspondence... and didn't know what the letter was referring to.

Your report will be kept confidential; they would have a rather difficult time getting people to inform if they couldn't be sure of anonymity. Having said that, the IRS may contact you if, in fact, they believe you have information that could lead to recovery of significant tax dollars or could lead to a criminal conviction. In addition, the level of interest in your info by the IRS will depend on a) the strength of the evidence and b) the $ amount in question. If you're turning in a business, that will get more attention than if you're turning in your next-door-neighbor Fred. (Personally, I wouldn't bother with reporting an individual, but businesses I certainly would; I would make sure my evidence is solid first, though.)

UPDATE/EDIT: They referenced a 1040 on the notice, huh? Sounds like the good ol' IRS to me. Seriously, the IRS is possibly the most incompetent organization in the entire US of A. If you feel that the tax evasion is of a criminal nature, you could try dealing with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. Be prepared for incompetence here, as well, but they will likely take you more seriously, if your evidence is solid.

And yes, I have personal experience in this area, having reported a business for tax fraud. The CEO will be going to jail in June. The wheels of justice grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.

If you want, you can remain anonymous. If you give your name, it is kept confidential. The IRS can, but is not required to, issue rewards. If you don't give your name, they can't give you a reward.
