A borderline personality disorder is a term used in psychiatry to define a disorder that is just over the so called line of normality. Many people with BPD function well, and many people live their lives unaware of the condition. However, BPD affects the relationships that people can build, sometimes pushing people away by their behaviour. BPD will also push boundaries and often transfer their problems onto someone else. The condition is both controversial and somewhat complex to understand or even diagnose.
There are no real medical treatment options for BPD but studies have shown that psychotherapy does help the individual to understand the condition and therefore minimise harm.

Borderline personality disorder is a diagnosis that is only given to adults. It is characterized by difficulty in interpersonal relationship. Someone with BPD tries extremely hard to have close relationships, but feels intense amounts of anxiety about it. Relationships become this "come close, go away" pattern which can be extremely destructive. Some theories are that BPD develops out of poor attachment and bonding as a young child, or as a response to a traumatice experience. This diagnosis has nothing to do with multiple personality disorder, though it sometimes is a catch-all diagnosis for therapists who are diagnosing very needy, manipulative clients with poor interpersonal boundaries.

A personality disorder marked by a long-standing pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, behavior, mood, and self-image that can interfere with social or occupational functioning or cause extreme emotional distress.
That is the dictionary definition, but it is far more complex than that, I would recommend this website:

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is defined within the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology as a mental condition characterized primarily by emotional dysregulation, extreme "black and white" thinking, or "splitting" (believing that something is one of only two possible things, and ignoring any possible "in-betweens"), and chaotic relationships. It is described by mental health professionals as a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in mood, interpersonal relationships, self-image, identity, and behavior, as well as a disturbance in the individual's sense of self. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of dissociation. ***

borderline personality disorder? it's close to multiple personalities, but not as severe. it's like have different degrees of your personality, which everyone has, happy, sad, angry...but the swings are severe and tend to take more control of your mind than the average person. my mom has a personality disorder, so i know from experience :) good luck

I think you mean "borderline personality".
that is someone just this side of "normal".
if you can define normal, you are way ahead of most psychiatrists.
it is basically a catchall diagnosis for people the psychiatrists are unable to pin an actual sustainable diagnosis on.
