I would do what Wise Old Man said above, with a few additional notes.
1) If you are looking at a particular time of night, try an hour later. When I started this year, I would look for worms around 8:30 or 9:00 and find a few, but they really started emerging around 9:30 or 10:00--then I hit the jackpot and would half fill a 2+ pound coffee can in about 45 minutes.
2) Use a very dim flashlight and don't shine it directly on the worms. They hate light and will head back in before you can say worm.
3) Try different areas of your lawn. Our back yard is better than the front, for example. Don't forget the flower beds. On a nice moist night, they can often be found just laying there--no pulling necessary.
Good luck!

Your best bet is to build a small compost pile. They will migrate there because it is a ready food source. But the best way to get a lot of crawlers at one time is to ask permission from a local golf course and go there at night with a flashlight and a quick hand. Some courses will allow you to hunt crawlers if you stay off the putting greens and if 2 or 3 people go you can easily catch 8-10 dozen at a time if you so desire. Build a crawler box in your back yard (there are box plans and material lists on the internet...pretty simple ) and just add crawlers whenever you go to the golf course to your own box and pretty soon you will have a lot of crawlers to use and wont have to go night hunting for them. Hope this helped...good luck!

Best way to get your own nightcrawlers is to soak the an area of your yard with water and wait till dark and they come out and use a dim or small light and grab them quickly or you'll miss it. Also it's easier topick the one's that are stuck together.

Use a garden hose to soak down the area you want to find them in, then wait until it's good and dark that night. Walk very quietly using a flashlight, and they should be laying on top of the ground. You have to be quick to catch them though!
