I know that it can sometimes be a parking lot on the freeway out there. Does anyone have any good tips? I have to put in some semblance of a work day before I leave...thanks!

Does anyone have any good tips? We are headed to the north fork and actually need a car once we are there. I have to put in some semblance of a work day before I leave...thanks!

On the weekend, the north fork is less crowded than the south fork. The roadway to the Hamptons is bumper to bumper for miles, but on the north fork it's clear sailing. Best bet is to stay on the main road, I think it's Sound Avenue. If you go off the main road, there are a lot of twist and turns, that will surely confuse anyone not from that area. Make sure you bring an Hagstrom map. You just might need it. Best time is after 10 a.m. and before 3 p.m.

The Monday before would be enough time usually...

But, barring that, 3 hours should be safe, especially if you listen to traffic radio, if you are driving. How far East is the question...on a good day, 3 hours should get you most of the way to the end of the island.

Leave before 3 or after 7, that's the best advie I can give, if you get stuck on the LIE or the parkways between 4:30-6:30 it's stop and go.

take lirr and have ur friend pick u up at the train, u'll get there on time, save money on gas and avoid the annoyance. just grab a beer, relax on the train and get picked up on the other side. if u want to beat traffic driving wise i say leave by 2:00 not a sec later! by 3:00 rush hour is a mess!

8 am no later than 10 am.

If you wait till noon, you may regret it.
