I was told today that I have an overactive thyroid and that my levels were way off. Also I was told that I have slightly high blood sugar. My doctor asked my symptoms relevant to hyperthyroidism ie, intolerance to heat, heart palpatations, appetite etc which i have some of however I am overweight and have been for quite a few years. I have within the last three months started to exersice and I mean really exercise and strength train. I'm losing inches but only a few pounds. Not only that I have several symptoms of hypothyroidism I think which the doctor didnt ask me about. He has me going for a thyroid scan next week but is there something I am missing? I filled out a sheet with all my symptoms but I feel like he didnt read them. How can I be overweight and have hyperthyroid? Will I gain more weight if I take the meds to correct this?? Help!!!?!?!?

No, not both at the same time. Hyper = too much, hypo = too little.

Usually if you have hyperthyroidism it will turn into hypothyroidism after a while because of how the hormones are. They fluctuate, not right away but over time. The reason you doctor wants you to take the meds is because there are major moods associated with such fluctuations its not all about weight. The thyroid regulated many many things. The scan will better be able to help with where you are at. Did they use the thyroid probe on you yet? Take pictures? I am a student in nuclear medicine and these are the tests we do. Giving the radioactive pill and so forth. I can add more if you add more to your question.

May be you can get both, you see a doctor to check,
The signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism include increased heart rate ‘“ tachycardia, increased activity of bowel movements, difficulty in sleeping, intolerance to heat, nervousness
In hypothyroidism, there are symptoms such as bradycardia- decreased heart rate, constipation, intolerance to cold, memory problems

My friend treated the disease by using natural ways through a e book which provide healthy diet and suitable exercise so you can refer to here for more information: http://adola.net/go/hypothyroidismrevolution/

you can swing both ways in a matter of days. Most docs, even endocrinologists don't know a thyroid from a hole in the ground or how to properly treat it. Be sure to bring up your concerns. Just because you are hyperthyroid it doesn't mean you'll loose weight, some hypo patients loose weight too and symptoms of both conditions can be similar.
for more info check out thyroid.about.com and join your state thyroid support group through yahoogroups. theres a national list too. Also check out the following link

it is unlikely that you will gain any more weight form the meds. Once you have the blood work done you will know for sure. Your thyroid controls so much in your body that it can really make things go haywire. I just started my thyroid medicine again yesterday today I feel like a freight train choo choo!! I was off my meds for about 3 years shame on me. I was so depressed and was having a lot of complications so my doc forced me to go back on it. Good luck to you and hope all goes well for ya!

overactive is what it is, the labs don't lie. You can't have both over active and underactive at the same time because you have only one thyroid gland.
that you are losing inches shows that you can lose, and it will be inches before it will be pounds as the muscles are building as the fat decreases, and muscles weighs more than fat. if you were hypothyroid, you wouldn't lose weight no matter what you did, or inches. And no you will not gain more weight if you take meds to correct the problem as long as you continue to work out and watch your diet.

First, a person cannot have both conditions. It's possible to have hyper (underactive thyroid) and be overweight. An overactive thyroid (hypo), such is present in our 21 yr. old cat, leads, usually, to a thin body. That little tabby eats like a horse but, to look at him, you'd think we were starving him! Check with your doc regarding medicine-induced weight gain. I'm not 100% solid on that, and I don't want to mislead you.
