I hear this 'fact' repeated many times in arguements, but I have never seen anyone able to substantiate their claim.

Does anyone who is fond of using this arguement have ANY proof that what they are saying is rooted in fact?

As far as I am concerned, it is religious propoganda published in christian 'science' textbooks in one last ditch attempt to try and blindly deny knowledge to young minds. It is out and outright lying in the face of defeat that can only be achieved in secular schools where brainwashing like this can be gotten away with.

If anyone can prove that Darwin actually said this, reference it here please.

Note: If you are going to reference, do it properly. Wikipedia, or "my mate told me.." are all just as bad as each other. Science has to substantiate it's claims, so should you.

A full academic reference is required - i.e. a doctor's deathbed report or one of Darwin's late journals etc. Something credible.

I remember reading somewhere that Dawkins wants a tape recorder near his deathbed to make sure that no one can say he converted to Christianity or denounced his stance on evolution. I think he is right in his fears.

I have never seen any clear evidence that Darwin said this. These kind of deathbed conversions are attributed to people all the time. It's shameless, and more than likely false, propaganda.

The story was told in America by a woman calling herself Lady Hope.

None of Darwin's relatives had ever heard of her and they were with him the entire time.

It was a popular evangelism technique in the 1800s - early 1900s to claim a conversion by a popular non-Christian. The same stories were told of Abraham Lincoln (but not the death bed version, for obvious reasons), Mark Twain and Thomas Edison.

And, like all of Christianity, it is based on a deliberate lie.

Well, you see, when people take mythological books like the Bible as "fact" they get confused as to what facts actually are.
So they think that if Darwin changed his mind about his book- then it means it wasn't true. How wierd is that?
Even if he changed his mind- which I doubt- that doesn't change that the fossil record exists, and so forth.

Darwin could have said evolution was a bag of crap it wouldn't have meant anything. Evolution is a proven fact regardless of any subjective opinions Darwin did or didn't express.

I beleive that the claim started with some of his relatives who claim that he made these statements on his death bed.

However, in most courts that would be considered "hearsay" and would not be admissible
