When someone gives up their life for you, (not necessarily thinking "love"), but just putting themselves in the path of a rabid animal, or an on-coming bus, are they not saving you from some kind of horrible fate? So when Jesus did that, what exactly was he saving us from, and what is so horrible about it?

Does he have "hero" status?

I think he carefully and thoughtfully lived his life so as to be a role model after his death in order to make the world a peaceful, sinless, good and just place by filling it with enlightened wise people who believe in those ideals and try to live up to them them after his example and who got that way from learning about his life, how he treated people, how he thought about existence and our place and role in it, and what he did in his own life and why. I think he wanted to teach from beyond his own physical lifetime into the future forever by keeping the spirit of his ideals alive in the people who follow him. Though I'm still not sure where he stood on the liberty and free thought thing. And no I'm not very religious, but I do like freedom, justice, peace, prosperity, philosophy, history, wisdom and the like.

I don't think Jesus sought danger, it was simply that the nature of his message was bound to upset some powerful people. Sometimes, even when we're not looking for trouble, trouble still finds us simply because we're doing the right thing and there are those who would rather the right thing not be done.

He was saving us from going to hell and suffering for our sins.
Its also nature to put your life down for someone at the spur of the moment. There are many situations when people just respond to danger by putting themselfs in danger without thinking about it.
