It depends on where you live, and how your property is set up. If you have a fenced yard, or a fenced area to keep the dog safe so he can't get out into the street, or if you're in a really rural area, that should be fine. If you're in a city, dogs need to stay on your property and not leave it, so fencing is really important. If he's got good shelter and water, then he should be fine outside, especially since he loves to play outside. This is fine to do and quite normal, so long as you have shelter and water and can keep him on your own property. I live out in the country and my neighbor's Chihuahua is outside most of the day, but is allowed to come inside anytime she wishes, or if the weather gets bad since she doesn't have a dog house, but only a porch to get under. With a chi you really don't know what hair in your food is like... you would HATE my pyrs! Just remember the dog also needs time with you as well as shelter and water and food.

Depends where you live. Chihuahuas are very sensitive to the elements. They can suffer from heatstroke because of their love for the sun, so be careful about leaving them outdoors. Chihuahuas were not made for cold weather either.

Do you have adequate shelter - something more than a tree or shrub? Will the puppy be safe, secure and away from larger animals and children?

Personally, I would never leave my chihuahua outdoors for an extended period of time unattended.

I wouldn't do this, my chihuahua gets very nervous when left alone, so when I go to work I place her in a medium sized doggie port with her blanket, she has food and water within her reach, my kids let her out when they come home for lunch, or I do when I get home from work.
I am afraid for her when she is outside ever since I watched a chicken hawk take a rabbit out of our yard that was about her size...so now I am a tad paranoid...

I am not a fan of having animals left alone outside all day, even if you provide food, water and shelter. They are still out there in the heat, or cold, and are open to be stolen by someone.. (This happens quite a bit)

Not to mention dogs who are kenneled seem to be the ones with aggression and destructive tendencies.

Also, this will make potty training nearly impossible, and you will have accidents in your home.

I personally wouldnt do it, ever. Especially with a Chi.

If it is warm and sunny, he's in a secured kennel with plenty of shelter from wind, it should be okay. Remember that he is just a tiny little pooch. He'll get sick easier than big dogs in rain, cold, wind, snow, but as long as he is safe, protected from the elements, and not nervous being left alone with all those sights and sounds and you don't put him out their and forget he needs attention. Definitely bring inside at night...before it gets cold and damp.

If the area is secure so he can't dig out. Dogs DO dig out from under fences if left unattended. And if he has a warm comfy dog house he can get into to avoid rain or heat. I guess it would be OK. He IS kinda little, though. And chihuahuas are notoriously "nervous" little dogs. Have you considered crate training instead? Most breeders and trainers advocate using those for dogs. Dogs actually like the confinement of the crates while they are alone. They are "pack" animals, and they look to you as the pack leader.

It is not a good idea. Besides, why bother to have a dog at all if you just want to keep him outside all day? It is not like your dog will be protecting your property and Chihuahuas are lap dogs, not outside dogs.

Not recommended at all, especially in the heat and cold. If you plan to, make sure you have a fence that extends underground so that he cannot dig out, and that he has plenty of fresh water in a spill proof bowl, and has a proper shelter.

I wouldn't. Because chihuahuas are so small and they can get hurt by many things.........like stray animals or even a fallen tree branch. I would keep the chihuahua inside and teach them to go on a puppy training pad.

Absoultly NOT, No dog should be left outside all day and a small one is just inviting disaster. Do you leave your baby, or toddler out side all day and bring them in a night??? If you want a pet, have a pet and care for it. If you just want something to keep outside, watch wild animals!!!
