My friend called and stated she had a friend that was very depressed but was retired from the army and loved to spend his money. She wants me to call him and talk to him and set up a date to go out one day. Anyone i have ever met was face to face. And i'm usually the one to start off things with a joke of how they are acting at a bar etc. I have never called someone that i know is depressed and try to lift there spirits. I told her if i call and i would rather we all went out together. But i am still left wondering what to say when i call. I know men are not very talkative. And i just happen to be sitting around the house myself feeling lonely all week, so how can i boost a retired mans spirits?

Give him a call.... tell him how you got hes number... ask him to met you somewhere so you guys can hang out.... or tell your friend to call him up and ask him to go out on a double date that she has a friend for him to hang with!

Just call and set up a date for coffee or something. You guys can chat and get to know eachother. I'm sure that having someone new to spend time with will start to raise his spirits. After talking for a bit you both will be able to figure out what the other needs.

Paintball sounded like fun but the gunfiring may set off some bad memories. Call him and tell him who you are and ask if he wants to meet you for icecream or do some Target or Walmart shopping (aimless shopping basically). Then go from there. Go for it. Look at it as fun. You could be doing this guy a favor just by getting him out of the house. good luck.

OK so instead of a "date" with dinner and drinks etc., meet for coffee and cake on a Sunday afternoon. Ask him questions about himself. Ask what he likes to do. Ask what is interests are. Does he have children? What about grandkids? Got the picture?

Smile. Be happy. Wear something bright but not gaudy.

You'll know in an hour if you want to see him again.

Btw - send this guy my way if you don't want him. He sounds nice.

Why doesn't your friend set up a double date?
Get her to invite him to go out with her, a date, and you.
I agree that it would be difficult to call someone up that you haven't met and strike up a conversation out of the blue much less set up a date.

I had a blind date once. I was so nervous. I later found out he was just the same. He took me to a movie. A funny one. The laughter broke the ice between us.

Be very cauctios about blind dates. Meet in a public place! And when you call him, just say "hi, i'm (your name), how are you? (your friend's name) gave me your phone, i wanna take you out!"
and invent some other bla blas about what your friend told you about him
