Many women wear them, not just Muslims. It's an Arab custom, but many Catholic women cover their heads. It's a sign of respect.

It's really something how many non-Muslims (whether Christian or not) find immense pleasure poking fun of or ridiculing the Islamic modest dress for women and, at the same time, do not criticize the dress of Catholic nuns. As if women should let everything hang out because that's the "proper way to dress."
Bottom line: If Catholic nuns can choose to dress modestly without being made fun of, so can Muslim women. They all deserve to be respected for their choice. Freedom of speech is one thing; however, it's very childish, immature, and downright rude, for anyone to make fun of other people's cherished traditions. It's as simple as that.

lol you're telling us beforehand that you will make fun of the answer so how do you expect me to answer after that
Fred hijab does not have to be the whole black cloth thing and it does not have to cover the face. I wear jeans and shirts but I do not like wearing clothes that fit tightly. who are you to say that wearing lose clothing is being a 2nd class citizen? My body is my own and its my choice who I want to show it to. drop the ethnocentrism and consider for once that not all people appreciate the same things as you.
It is not in any way degrading for me to dress modestly but it is degrading to me to have random men look at my body. I am not an object for the world to see. This is my view. whether others disagree with it or not does not matter. the fact is that it is not degrading or oppressing to me so stop the BS

Muslim women wear head scarfs coz Allah commanded them too. They cover their heads for Allah. And they have self respect, keep themselves covered unlike some women who put their meat on public display

If you go to Saudi Arabia and ask the women, I am sure that they will tell you, if they will talk to you, that they appreciate having to cover their entire bodies with black cotton. After all, it cuts down on clothes costs, etc. In other words, asking theistic women if they like being treated as second class people is not likely to obtain any response other than yes.

It is an old custom.
Many Jewish and Christian women also cover their hair for religious reasons.
